day 3 in the pit

there's not very much more to say, the photos pretty much speak for themselves.. another hard day of digging for the hole team (: we've had to fetch a taller ladder which we're all quite smug about haha but yeh, it's just great being able to see progress whilst you're working.. i'm really enjoying the team we've got and those coming and going to help as well (: it's now just before lunch time and i think we've hit about 10ft (or 3.2m for those like me who don't speak england).. which is phenomenal given our circumstances. i think we'll be in trouble in a little while though because the buckets need to be hoisted up so much further and simultaneously the hoe stands are getting to be quite far overhead.. it's just gonna be slower progress unless someone comes up with a better system. given the limited equipment, i think this is it for the time being..

it's actually been sprinkling again on and off and it's just started absolutely pissing down so i don't think we're heading out again until it calms down a bit.. the earth is gonna be turned to thick clay and i'm not particularly looking forward to it :p

well.. not only did we go back  after lunch but we also went back after a quick tea break and worked overtime for an hour and a half.. we are absolutely smashing it. the hole has now reached 12ft (nearly 3.7m) and we're using the longest ladder we have and having to yank up buckets a really long way.. for one of the shifts campbell, jane and i had a girl team going on in the bottom of the pit, alternating between hoeing and shoveling, and we stayed down there for a good hour and a bit straight (: so proud.. my bucket-hauling shift was really grueling though because by that stage we were working between 11-12ft and that's a lot of rope to pull up.. we also had a problem with the bucket getting caught on the plank of wood when it'd come up and there were a few times i was quite worried about falling into the pit..

in any case finishing up and taking a photo from the bottom was so satisfying.. it's gonna be a monster by the time we're done (: and i don't think i've ever been so grateful for a shower in my life.
